Szabolcs Tőkés is a Senior Scientist at the Analogic and Neural Computing Research Laboratory of the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Besides academic work in the field of laser physics, holography, acousto-optics, optical information processing, diffractive optics he has industrial experience in the manufacture of gas lasers, development and manufacture of laser image-recording equipment. His research and development activity founded a new branch of industry in Hungary, namely the laser recorder’s industry. This includes the manufacturing of laser-plotters for printed circuit filming and imagesetters for printing-press. His current research centered about diffractive optics and optical computing.
Professional experience:
1962-1969: MOM (Hungarian Optical Works) Budapest
1969-1984: Computer and Automation Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest (as the head of the Department for Application of Lasers in the Computer Techniques)
1984-1992: ITEX Engineering Company, Budapest (as technical and scientific director)
1992-1998: Computer and Automation Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest (as the head of the Laser Laboratory)
1999- : leader of the group working on optical implementation of the CNN universal computer
He is author or co-author of more than 30 articles and holds 14 patents. He has been project leader of several national projects (R&D of computer holography, acousto-optical devices, and development of the first European laser printer, laser plotter/image setter, interferometric printer). He was the Associate Editor of the Optics and Laser Technology (1975-1993).
