KIRAKAT One year art project 24.02.2000 - 23.02.2001. Budapest I. district. Hattyú street 10/c. www.sztaki.hu/providers/kirakat We made 12 installations on the street in a shop-window considering the serial repeatings and continous in nature appearing during a year.We monthly build a surrounding for a principle actor, who appears only in references, with showing the characteristics resulting from the subdivision of an cyclical unit into 365 days and it`s determination by the changes of light and darkness (like space-time periodity). This basic rhythm in a life of a human being can not be seperated from the big changes in nature so we use this structure as a natural dramaturgy. The "action material" resulting from these characteristics fit into their place (in time) by their own and therby helping the communication with the viewer. This creats a favourable surrounding foe emphasizing the effects we stimulated, the provokative elements, the surpluss information. To each shop-window belongs a site part that we put on the Internet parallel to the exhibition openings.The shop-window as an exhibition place offers the opportunity to get into direct contact with the people, while the Internet serves as a possibilitiy to communicate without being bound to a place and is as a virtual place that contains collages of pictures, sounds and textes that appertain to the installations and contains a part of the viewers reactions, too. It was imporatant for us that we work independent from any economic and institutionalized art background, because this would have made the desired aim impossible. Shop-window Most of the people are curious how other people live like. We like to cast a glance in other people`s flats, when we walk down the streetand get the possibility to look through someone`s window. While we allow the viewer to take a look at our self-made privater places we exploit his curiosty, his everyday voyeurizm. A private place located in a public place evokes an irritative situation for the viewer. When someone passes the shop-window and takes a short look at the room -what is an excusable sin- he might feel as if he looked through a window where the inhabitant is not at home or just went out a moment. When he takes advantage of the situation stops and looks around he can explor the interiour. He can become a posessor of information he could never reach otherwise. Thereby we bring the viewer in such a role that he might feel like a sneaking thief who could not resist the temptation. However he is confronted with something that because of his personality and the things he has to blanket moves him unpleasantly or makes him feel that it would have been better not to see this. Web While the shop-windows changed alternately replacing eachother accrding to the exhibition openings, the website expanded continously, filling up with content from one month to the other. The site is subdivided into 12 parts , to each shopwindow belongs a site part . They are connected through a common theme. The site and the shop-windows complete eachother but they function self-dependently as well. The sites belolnging to the installations stimulate the viewer to act. They consist of pictures, texts and sounds with hidden sites you can only enter by games, by solving tasks, by accident or evetually by intentional search. The more time someone spends on the sites the more information he will gets ; the more attention he dedicates for the exploration of the website, likewise the shop-window the more he gets into the eavesdropping, spying role. The website steadily contains the whole project documentation, the archive of the shop-window exhibtions, the collection of found shop-window photographs made by us or send by people via e-mail.
