Why are there artists?

Everybody is an artist. All human activity is "art". Poiezis and/or techne. Every human activity is artistic. Man's second nature is artistic.

What is the difference between poiezis and techne?

Techne is the extension of poiezis (a la McLuhan).

Are we not here smuggling in a difference between art and non-art through the back door?

No, because techne is art. And this is the turning point: techne is an extension of poiezis, intermedia is the widening of poiezis. Just look!
